Древний человек проходил тысячи километров для обмена товаромSecrets of the past: Ancient man pass thousands of miles to exchange goods. The CRO-magnons, who lived in the far East in the stone age, carrying with it a quality material for making stone tools over very long distances of thousands of kilometers or more is evidence that ancient people traveled and exchanged goods, say scientists.

The method of analysis of the chemical composition of the stone weapons and household items in a research reactor allows to determine the source of the raw material, i.e. the area where it was mined. This gives archaeologists reliable data on the migrations and contacts of the ancient population, which previously could only imagine.

«Now in print (the journal Archaeometry) is the article on obsidian sources in Hokkaido and the ways, which got the obsidian on Sakhalin island up to its Northern part on the distance of a thousand kilometers, all the Kurile Islands and even on the lower Amur. On Sakhalin the obsidian people brought some way for 20 thousand years ago», — said the participant of expedition, the Russian specialist in geoarchaeology Yaroslav Kuzmin Institute of Geology and Mineralogy SB RAS on Wednesday on a press-conferences in Novosibirsk.

Obsidian (volcanic glass) for the people of the Paleolithic and Neolithic was the best stone for making knives, scrapers, pointed plates of spearheads. Obsidian in ancient times has become an essential material for successful survival hunters.

Each Deposit of obsidian has a unique composition of elements and impurities, which currently scientists are fairly easy to recognize. Due to the fact that such deposits in the world are not so much defining the affiliation of the ancient weapons one of them is actively developing in the world.

«We have established contact with colleagues from the University of Missouri (USA), where we study obsidian in a nuclear research reactor. Here they study the chemical composition of the obsidian, their sources and compared to each other. A very beautiful example of the distribution of obsidian showed a field on the island of Hokkaido (Japan),» — said Kuzmin.

According to him, the determination of the sources of origin of tools with different sites of an ancient man, gives scientists the perfect information about the contacts of people with this source.

«For example, the Kuril Islands — a distance of 1.2 thousand kilometers from the source on the island of Hokkaido. The distance through the Straits, across which small motor boats and now deadly occupation. However, in ancient times, people did. These figures are perfect proof of the existence of contacts, migration, and exchange that for purely archaeological data is very difficult to establish. Here, the information is really proven,» — said the scientist.

Kuzmin said that for the first time science has received credible information about the presence of direct or indirect contact between the source of raw materials for weapons of ancient people in this region of the world and Parking.

When they are 10 or 20 miles and age 1 thousand years is one thing, but when between them a thousand miles and age 20 thousand years, it is quite another quality. Somehow needed this gem to find, exchange. This suggests that there was contact. Directly or through intermediaries Chet is a separate issue,» — said the researcher.

On the basis of these studies one can understand how valuable was obsidian, and what distances and obstacles were willing to overcome, and to draw conclusions about the interaction of ancient people with nature and their kind, he said.»

«For example, on the Kamchatka Peninsula near five sources of obsidian, and the Parking lot in the middle. The distance from the source 100 to 300 kilometers of impenetrable thickets. But people used not one or two sources of obsidian with the same quality, but five. It tells about some very big need of people to collect it from several places, about the high human adaptation to natural conditions and structure of human thinking» — said Kuzmin.

According to him, these data offer scientists a way to the studies impossible to date.

«Our methods have allowed to prove, but to explain — this is another matter and not always easy. But this is one of the clearest examples of the study of the raw material when the contacts and the migration of man is «strong legs,» he said.

In conclusion, the scientist gave reporters an example of a proven fact, when obsidian with Red lake (lower reaches of the Anadyr river) about 2.5-3 thousand years ago came to Alaska across the Bering Strait, breaking, thus, the water a distance of 800 kilometers.

Tools made of obsidian pebbles were somehow transferred, although in Alaska there’s your obsidian. Here is an exchange between «old» and «new» light. Any other methods it would be impossible to prove,» added the scientist, materials .
