The giants of Monte Prama — mysterious sculptures of the ancient civilization of Sardinia
The giants of Monte Prama sculptures are made of Sandstone, which in General had a height of 2 to 2.5 meters. Presumably they were created by the Nuragic civilization between the 11th and 8th century BC, which also left behind many stone round towers (Nuraghi).
The Nuragic civilization itself is a big mystery to scholars and it is not known whence came this civilization, whether it was the local culture of Sardinia and its bearers came from somewhere across the sea.
In 1974, near Oristano on the Western coast of the island was discovered shattered a large stone sculpture. In General, they consisted of soldiers, archers and fighters with shields. During the period of excavations since 1974, was found more than 5 thousands of fragments of statues, including 22 of the torso and 15 hands.
The statue immediately called Giants or Giants. In addition to the very large sizes they had unusual eyes in the form of concentric disks.
Experts believe that the massive statues represent mythological characters or gods. Some of the massive statues were found near the ancient tombs, so experts believe that the statues could be placed around them, like stone guards. But the statue also could belong to the temple, which was destroyed or which is not unearthed.
In March 2015, after 40 years of study and restoration, the giants were presented to the public at the National archaeological Museum in Cagliari and Goat Museum.
Five thousand pieces recovered 33 stone sculptures. Also in September of 2016 had found two relatively whole giant, which was different from the previously found statues — they had long shields to the side and not overhead. This position was very similar to the pose a small Nuragic bronze statuettes found North of Rome. The Dating of this figurine given the IX century BC.
If the sculptures of the giants is also created at this time, these giants are the earliest example of the manufacture figures of the colossi (gigantic statues) in the Mediterranean region. They are a few centuries ancient ancient Greek colossi. They are also the most ancient anthropomorphic sculptures of the Mediterranean after the Egyptian statues.
But there is another mystery associated with the giants of Sardinia. Some scientists believe that those giant statues are very similar to masks that are used today in traditional festivals of Sardinia. It turns out that some of the ancient ceremonies and traditions have survived on this island for more than 3000 years.
