Russian scientists have warned about the rapid spread in the waters of the oceans toxic red algae Prorocentrum minimum. These plants cause so-called «red tides» and «bloody rain».

They quickly expand habitat due to its unique ability to eat organic matter and inorganic compounds, almost without limits, reported in the journal Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science.

According to Sergei Skarlato from the Institute of Cytology RAS in St. Petersburg, red algae equally well absorb dissolved nitrogen, and if not, easily switch to organic and even popular types of fertilizers.

Religious people of Spain and Caribbean countries that have recently experienced an actual invasion of red algae that I believe are associated with the tides and rains, painted in purple color, a sign of the impending end of the world. But scientists calm: anything similar does not threaten Earth. The observed anomaly is caused by the expansion and bloom of Prorocentrum minimum.

True the animal world — fish, birds and even microbes «red tides» and «bloody rain» are a danger because living algae microorganisms secrete a nerve poison-brevetoxin and other dangerous substances. The scientists explained that in this way the poisonous plankton attacks the competitors with a shortage of nutrients, simultaneously turning them into food for themselves.

Russian scientists found that Prorocentrum minimum, most recently appeared in the Baltic sea, successfully squeezed out of him the usual plankton. Large colonies of red algae have already formed spots along the banks of the Baltic countries and Russia, becoming a threat to human health and marine life.

Red algae easily adapt to any changes and can exist in a strong reduction of water salinity, changing metabolism. The experiments showed that reducing the concentration of inorganic nitrogen compounds, the occupants simply switch to other sources of nitrogen, traces of vital activity of any living organisms, their decomposition products or fertilizers.

Russian scientists are going to simulate the conditions under which Prorocentrum minimum will multiply particularly rapidly, in order to predict and regulate the process of proliferation of red algae.

Recently, German scientists have suggested that the wide distribution of red algae is able to affect even the climate of the planet.
