Sacrifices the Slavs
Religion Eastern Slavs for a long time was paganism. The Slavs worshipped stones, trees, groves, forests, animals. Invisible spirits, souls of ancestors and relatives «inhabit» surrounding the ancient Slav world. Already not the object itself is the object of veneration. Worship refers to living in it spirit, demon. Not the object itself, namely, the spirit (demon) has a positive or negative influence on the course of events and the fate of people.
Spirits, originally representing a homogeneous mass, separated. First of all, the habitat, becoming a «master of space». In the water lived water and of deprivation, the forest was a Kingdom of Goblin or Kobold, and in the fields in the tall grass of the field workers live. In the home «owner» of the house.
Among the gods who were known in Russia, stands Perun — the God of storms, lightning and thunder. Also believed in Volos or Veles — God of cattle, Commerce, and wealth. His cult is very ancient.
Was still Dazhbog, and Khors — the different incarnation of the solar deity. Stribog — God of wind, vortex and blizzards. Mokosh, apparently, earthly wife of Perun the Thunderer, which began from the «mother damp earth». In ancient times she was the goddess of fertility, of water, subsequently, the patroness of female works and the maiden of fate.
Finally, Simargl — the only zoomorphic creature of the Pantheon of ancient gods (sacred winged dog, perhaps of Iranian origin). Simargl is a deity of a lower order, which guarded the seeds and the crops.
Ancient Rus and after the adoption of Christianity observed the pagan cults. Most pagan beliefs and customs continued to be observed without or with a small introduction in them of Christian standards and beyond.
Sacrifice in Slavic paganism — it is a known fact. To their gods, or rather their idols, and brought meat, grain, flowers, some material values. Did it in order to appease God, to ask him about anything or to thank. Also, the sacrifice was a typical rite of passage for all sorts of holidays.
Sacrifice in paganism was not only for gods but also for other creatures and spirits, for example, for a house. In addition, to appease thus could and ancestors in the so-called memorial days.
Slavs were confident that, if not to sacrifice to a particular deity or spirit, they can become angry. And their anger just will not lead to anything good. Slavic paganism assumed differentiated offerings. That is, the approach in this case was individual. For each God or spirit has its own required.
Victims were often brought to temples (the so-called pagan temples), where he installed the idols of the gods. If required you have to bring the brownie, the devil and other spirits, respectively, in the place of their habitat.
Sacrifices the Slavs were divided into bloody and bloodless. The second brought the spirits, ancestors, female deities. For example, the ancestors of the typical required was food, for the goddess Lada — the women brought flowers and berries, to swab a broom and soap and so on.
As for blood sacrifices, then those, according to the ancient Slavs, demanded the main gods worshiped. These include Perun, Yarilo.
As the rites in this case were made by animals, birds, and probably people. If, nevertheless, brought the meat animals after the holiday or ritual, it was always eaten by the people themselves. And the bones and other inedible «parts» used for divination. After this they were thrown into the water, the fire or buried.
Typical required, for example, for the earth was the grain. Because it represents the harvest, and the means supposed to bring good luck in his collection.
Also required could be a dining room. This sacrifice of food that eats the man himself. He seems to be sharing his meal with God. And food that needs to be taken from the General «pot» where all are fed.
The construction required is the bringing of horses or poultry.
Wedding required was a rooster.
For the health and fertility of cattle slaughtered white lamb.
It is debatable whether the Slavs of the pagan human sacrifices. Controversial, as there is no evidence of this from pre-Christian era. There are written sources that speak about them clearly, but they belong to X and later centuries.
In the beginning of X century ad, an Arab author wrote about the rite of burial of some rich Slav. And the sacrifices it had chickens, dogs, cows, horses and… a girl.
According to other medieval authors, at the funeral men were often sacrifice «in the form of» the widow of the deceased.
For example, in the chronicle «Tale of bygone years» refers to the sacrifice to Perun, a young Christian (this was, allegedly, in the year 983). The choice of this unfortunate young men has defined lots. Similar stories are also described in against the gods Svyatovit, Triglav.
In the «tale of bygone years» also there are other mentions of human sacrifice: about the inhabitants of Kiev said that they were led to the images of the gods, set on a hill, «their own sons and daughters and graha (sacrificed) by the devil.»
It is known that after the baptism of Rus was a bitter struggle of Christianity and paganism. So, once Gentiles literally devoured the Bishop and brought his body as a sacrifice. It was in the second half of the XI century. This was the case we learn from one of the German chronicler.
Also, according to the «Slavonic Chronicles» Gelmolda (1167-1168.): «Among the many Slavic deities is mainly Sventovit (Zuantewith), the God of earth RANS (the land of the tribe runs, they obodrits), as it is the most convincing answers. Next to him the rest as if they worship the demigods. Therefore, as a sign of special respect they have used each year to bring him a human sacrifice — Christian, what will indicate the lot…».
