The face on the shroud of Turin may be the result of the earthquake
The face on the shroud of Turin may be the result of the earthquake. A group of researchers led by Alberto Carpinteri (Alberto Carpinteri) of the Politecnico di Torino believes that the famous image on the shroud of Turin can be explained by the phenomena that accompanied the earthquake. Scientists believe that neutron radiation caused by an earthquake in 33 ad, contributed to «imprint» on the linen cloth of the image of man, descent from the cross. Moreover, radiation increased the content of carbon-14: why the radiocarbon Dating, performed in 1988, showed that the relics only 728 years old.
Then it was suggested that the cloth with the face made sometime between 1260 and 1390 BC. In 2009, it was also found that the weave of the canvas is characteristic of the Middle ages: this was the basis for the hypothesis that the Shrine is just a medieval fake.
According to legend, the Shroud of Turin is a burial cloth that wrapped Jesus Christ after removal from the cross. In it he was buried in the cave. The first mention of the relic dates from the XIV century, when Geoffroy de Charny announced that the shroud is from him, and placed it in his possession in Lira. In 1452 it was bought by Louis I of Savoy and kept it in chambéry, where she suffered greatly during the fire of 1532. After the transfer of the capital to Turin in 1578, the shroud is kept in a special ark in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Turin. The artifact is exposed for viewing rarely (once in a quarter of a century).
Public interest in the shroud of Turin increased in 1898, after an Italian Amateur photographer Secondo Pia (Secondo Pia) took the pictures and found negatives of vivid human face (in reality the features are barely visible). When radiocarbon Dating in 1988 showed implausibly young age relics, many scientists have subjected these data to criticism, suggesting that the Shroud is much older and that the result was incorrect because of neutron radiation − a phenomenon that is a result of nuclear fusion or fission, in which neutrons released from atoms, and then interacting with the nuclei of other atoms to form new isotopes of carbon. A similar reaction can be generated using nuclear reactors or particle accelerators, but sometimes it happens naturally.
Previously, no plausible physical reasons for the origin of this mysterious neutron radiation, which changed the age of the shroud, was proposed. Although put forward the version that «youth» relics associated with cooking in oil or high temperatures in case of fire.
Now the team Carpinteri using a series of mechanical and chemical experiments determined that the source of such neutron emissions can be high-frequency seismic waves generated in the earth’s crust during earthquakes. To come to this conclusion, researchers studied petagine the fission reaction, which is triggered when very brittle rock samples are crushed under the pressure. This process helps to produce neutrons without gamma radiation. By analogy, the scientists and concluded that with increasing the neutron flux in accordance with the seismic activity, the result will be about the same, only amplified many times.
According to scientists, the source of neutrons was a historic earthquake occurred in Old Jerusalem in 33 ad. Power it, presumably, was 8.2 on the Richter scale, which is enough to interaction of neutrons with nitrogen nuclei gave rise to protons, which can act on the fabric as a reagent. This led to the formation of the image. So one phenomenon and provoked the emergence of a «print» of a crucified man with his arms folded on the shroud, and increased the levels of the isotopes carbon-14 in the linen fibers.
«We believe that, most likely, the release neutron particles from rocks in the earthquake provoked the appearance of the image on the linen cloth of the shroud, and the seizure of thermal neurons of the nuclei of nitrogen lead to an incorrect result of radiocarbon Dating,» says Carpentieri.
However, skeptical representatives of the scientific community are confident that if such an earthquake and neutron emissions occurred in reality, the rest of the archaeological value of the time also would have looked «younger» and would retain traces of radiation.
At the moment the leading expert and head of the Foundation of the Resurrection of the shroud (Resurrection of the Shroud Foundation) mark Antonacci (Mark Antonacci) is trying to obtain permission from Pope Francis on the molecular analysis of the cloth using the latest technology. He hoped that this procedure will be able to clarify the questions of the age and authenticity of the relic.
